8 Steps to Building Confidence

Building Confidence

People often think that the reason some people are so confident in business is because they have been successful, but in reality it is the other way around. Having a strong sense of confidence leads to more success.

Consider this:

  • If you doubt your own abilities, then it is unlikely that you will convince anyone else to have confidence in them.
  • Being afraid to step out of your comfort zone means you will not go out for new challenges and stay trapped in the same position you are in now.
  • Without confidence, you will always let outside obstacles stop you from moving ahead.

In order to be successful in business, you need to build up your confidence and no one can do that but you. Break down the barrier of doubt and pull yourself ahead to be more confident and more successful in your career. Here are some steps that you can take to help increase the amount of self-esteem you have in yourself and your abilities.

1. Take a Good Look

Being confident is not the same as being conceited. A person who is confident knows what they are capable of and works hard to accomplish tasks. Someone who is conceited believes that they are capable of far more than their abilities. Take a look at yourself and be honest about your abilities and your weaknesses. Find ways to improve on your weaknesses so that they do not pull you down. As you start to build on those things, you can be more confident in your abilities and turn those weaknesses into strengths.

2. Learn to Say No

If you are one of many people who find it hard to say no to people, then you are more likely to feel anxious and stressed at work. This can easily lead to burnout, which breaks down your confidence. You need to learn that saying no is healthy. Understand that it does not mean you are incapable of doing the task but that you are committed to the things you already have on your plate and want to focus on doing well with accomplishing those things.

3. Build a Good Relationship with Your Boss

Being on the outs with your boss at work can be a real confidence killer. You cannot build confidence if your supervisor is constantly undermining the things you contribute and being critical of all that you do. Find out if there is a way to improve that relationship and try to make it stronger. If it looks like there is nothing to be done to make things better, then it might be time to move on.

4. Collect Small Victories

Not every accomplishment has to be groundbreaking. Find ways to achieve at even small tasks. Each of these small victories goes toward building up the areas in your brain that boost your motivation. These victories will echo through you for a long time to come, pushing you ahead to feel more confident in your abilities.

5. Seek Out a Mentor

Imagine having someone who is in your corner, cheering you on as you work on a project or work towards a promotion. Having a mentor can really boost your confidence. They can give you an outside perspective on who you are and what you do. They can also provide valuable advice that comes from their own experiences and accomplishments.

6. Get Exercise

Sitting at your desk all day and spending evenings sitting around the house are not good for your physical health or your mental wellbeing. Find ways to fit some exercise into your daily schedule. It does not have to be a full-blown gym session. Just taking a walk during lunch or taking a yoga class in the evenings can help improve not just your body but your spirit as well. Seeing changes to your body that are a result of the things you have been doing goes a long way to improving self-confidence.

7. Dress to Impress

As much as we hate to admit it, we do often judge a book by its cover and the same goes for people. When we see someone dressed with confidence, it is hard not to believe that they are successful. Find clothes that make you feel ready to take on the world. Dressing well is one of the best ways to boost your confidence. When we believe that we look good, we exude self-confidence. Take time to craft your appearance each day and you will feel more confident in who you are on the inside.

8. Be Assertive

Do not mistake aggression for assertiveness. Crossing the line could lead people to see you as a bully, not a success. Feeling insecure often leads to aggression as people tend to lash out when they lack confidence in themselves. Remember, the way to the top is not by stepping on others’ fingers.
