Why Work With a Career Coach?

Career Coach

A coach can be found for virtually anything: sports, business, life, and career. The reason is because everyone can benefit from another person’s experience and guidance when they are working toward an ultimate goal.

Feeling stuck in any step of the career building process means that you definitely need a guiding hand to help you get the process going.

If you want to find your passion and work toward a career in a field that you can build a solid future in, then meeting with a career coach will help get you there. There is no reason to spend years of your working life in a job that doesn’t inspire you. A career coach will help you uncover that passion and create a plan to make it happen.

Coaching Benefits

Ask anyone who has worked with one and they will tell you that at the end of their coaching sessions, they were able to:

  • Assess their own talents and abilities
  • Clearly define their career goals
  • Develop an action plan for managing their career
  • Stay in tune with the job market
  • Be more self-aware
  • Be more confident in their potential

What to Look for in a Career Coach

First, find someone who has built a great reputation. Ask people for recommendations. If you don’t know anyone who has worked with a career coach before, then go to the Internet. Find coaches who have a well-designed website with plenty of client testimonials. Look at their online presence. Are they on social media? You want someone who is relevant and knows how to reach out online.

You don’t want to end up with someone who gained their coaching know-how from a Google search. Try to find someone who has credentials from a professional organization such as the International Coach Federation or other reputable organization.

You also want to look for someone who has a few years of experience and also specializes in the field you are interested in, whether you’re looking for moving into a C-suite level career or launching your own business or transitioning to a technical career.

What Your Coach is Not

Do not sign up with anyone who guarantees that they will get you your “dream job”. A great career coach is not a genie. They are someone who is going to help you do all the work to find that dream job on your own by giving you the confidence and ability to do just that.
