Why Do Training Programs Fail?

Every business knows that there is a lot of value in proper training. It gets your entire team on the same page, communicates the same message, and sets the tone for what you expect from your employees and their role in the success of your business. But the problem is that so many training programs fail to do this. Companies spend thousands and even millions of dollars on training programs, only to have them fall short of their intended purpose. Why?

The purpose of training is to make changes to behaviors that are already ingrained in employees and to implement new behaviors. But the problem is that change is hard, especially when it comes up against years of previous experience. In order to make change work, there has to be follow-up and follow-through. The reason so many training programs fail is because they do not have follow-up and follow-through.

When you work with the right training programs, you have coaches who do follow-up sessions after the training program is completed. Having a coach follow-up after a training program has three key benefits:

  • Question-and-answer for real world application. It’s easy to implement a strategy in a classroom setting, but putting it to use in the real world is more difficult. The Q & A part of follow-up helps to increase successful implementation.
  • Support. There is going to be some resistance as participants try to put the new ideas into practice. Support from the instructor and their peers improve the chances of these new practices taking root in your team.
  • Accountability. The team will have to do some homework and keep putting the ideas from the training program into use. Being required to report back on their progress means they will stick to the path they have been set on.

The type of follow-up support that comes with a training program means that you will see more success from your training program than before. You will notice dramatic changes in your small business that help move you further ahead towards your goals with a team that is working together to drive that success.
