Things Interviewers Are Watching For During the Interview

How many times have you walked away from an interview feeling confident because you have the skills and experience needed for a position but never received a call back from the company? This happens to job seekers all too often. It’s not because of a deficiency in their resumes.

Interviewers are often looking beyond a candidate’s resume when they come in for an interview in order to make a decision about how well the candidate fits with the company as well as the position. Knowing what these interviewers are watching for when you go in for your appointment can help you have your best interview yet.

1. Your enthusiasm

A positive attitude can open more doors than a flawless resume. An interviewer is looking for a candidate who is excited about the position and the company, demonstrates a desire to work hard and get things done. You communicate enthusiasm through every step, from your cover letter to your body language during the interview to your post-interview thank you note. Make sure you are letting the interviewer know that you are very interested in the position for which you are applying.

2. How well you communicate

It should be no surprise that employers still place a high value on people who can communicate effectively. Working for a company means interacting with a variety of people throughout the day and they need to know that the people they choose to be a part of the team are going to be able to do that well. Body language and tone play a large part in effective communication. Convey to the hiring team that you are comfortable in who you are by asking questions and keeping eye contact during your interview.

3. The skills you bring

Make sure that you really do have the skills and experience that an employer is asking for in a job candidate by comparing your resume to the job listing. Be prepared to offer examples of actions you have taken in previous positions in order to deal with a challenge and the results of those actions. This demonstrates to the interviewer that you really are capable of the things listed in your resume.

4. How well you fit with the company and the position

Being the right fit for a company is a combination of your skills and experience as well as your personality. If you have a very buttoned-up demeanor, then an employer may not feel that you are a good fit for their more laid-back startup company environment. Don’t be afraid to show a bit of your personality when you’re in the interview so that the employer can better gauge how well you will fit in with the company.
